Alfa Romeo 159 Overview

The 159 is available in both front and four-wheel drive, configurations. The “Q4” four-wheel drive system utilises a Torsen type C twin differential (front and centre differential in the same unit). The gearbox is a six-speed manual on most models (1.8 has a five-speed), and a six-speed automatic Q-Tronic gearbox (Aisin AW TF-80SC). The Selespeed gearbox is for sale in some countries.

A Sportwagon variant was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006. An automatic gearbox option for the 2.4 JTDM diesel model was also launched that year, and later extended to other versions.

The 159 Ti is available with a choice of three different gearboxes. Fitted with a six speed manual gearbox, the 159 Ti has a top speed of 222 kmh and dispatches the run from zero to 100 kmh in 8.8 seconds, yet on the open road is capable of achieving 7.3 litres per 100 kmh. With the six speed Selespeed gearbox, the 159 Ti 2.2 JTS offers the same top speed and acceleration, yet, thanks to the fuel saving abilities of the gearbox, uses less fuel and cuts CO2 emissions.

A gearbox’s primary job

We offer absolute commitment to quality, meticulous attention to detail and an unparalleled level of service have made the UK’s leading specialist in gearboxes.

Just like that of a manual gearbox, the automatic gearbox’s primary job is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.

Without a gearbox, cars would be limited to one gear ratio, and that ratio would have to be selected to allow the car to travel at the desired top speed. If you wanted a top speed of 80 mph, then the gear ratio would be similar to third gear in most manual gearbox cars.

You’ve probably never tried driving a manual gearbox car using only third gear. If you did, you’d quickly find out that you had almost no acceleration when starting out, and at high speeds, the engine would be screaming along near the red-line. A car like this would wear out very quickly and would be nearly undriveable.

The key difference between a manual and an automatic gearbox is that the manual gearbox locks and unlocks different sets of gears to the output shaft to achieve the various gear ratios, while in an automatic gearbox; the same set of gears produces all of the different gear ratios. The planetary gear set is the device that makes this possible in an automatic gearbox.
