When you take apart and look inside a gearbox, you will find a huge assortment of parts in a fairly small space. Among other things, you see :

What’s in an automatic gearbox

  • An ingenious planetary gear set
  • A set of bands to lock parts of a gear set
  • A set of three wet-plates clutches to lock other parts of the gear set
  • An incredibly odd hydraulic system that controls the clutches and bands
  • A large gear pump to move gearbox fluid around

Manual gearboxes you will find a lay shaft, collar and folks.

Manumatic gearboxes Manumatic is a portmanteau word, combining the words manual and automatic, that applies to a class of automotive gearboxes. Manumatic most often refers to an automatic transmission; with some elements of manual transmission control (e.g. a gear can be manually selected instead of having the computer control all shifts). This type of transmission was introduced in the beginning of the 21st century. Different car manufacturers have been using a variety of labels for their manumatic transmissions, such as ‘tiptronic’, ‘Geartronic’, ‘Touchshift’, ‘Sporttronic’, and others.

Looking after your Mulsanne Gearboxes

Changing the gearbox fluid and filter is probably the most important service that you can perform on your Mulsanne. The gearbox has metallic wear components. Once these wear, the filter clogs up and the oil is degraded over time. This starves the hydraulic pump of oil, especially on cold start ups and causes the pump to cavitate. This is the squealing noise that can be heard. This can cause long term damage to the gearbox.

Mulsanne features

These new technologies are complemented by all that power gets routed through the new eight-speed automatic gearbox (with paddle shifters) which, for the first time on a flagship Bentley, comes with steering wheel mounted gearshift.

A new Drive Dynamics Control system operated by a rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift selector can be used to select from three standard modes, Bentley, Sport and Comfort, offering precise calibration of suspension and steering control systems.

A fourth mode, ‘Custom’, allows the driver to select bespoke settings via the multimedia system to ‘tune’ the Mulsanne to a preferred driving style. A new air suspension system with continuously variable dampers creates an even more refined and comfortable ride at lower speeds, yet can reduce the Mulsanne’s ride height automatically at high speeds to reduce lift and improve aerodynamic stability.

A Gearbox’s primary job

Just like that of a manual gearbox, the automatic gearbox’s primary job is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.

Without a gearbox, cars would be limited to one gear ratio, and that ratio would have to be selected to allow the car to travel at the desired top speed. If you wanted a top speed of 80 mph, then the gear ratio would be similar to third gear in most manual gearbox cars.

You’ve probably never tried driving a manual gearbox car using only third gear. If you did, you’d quickly find out that you had almost no acceleration when starting out, and at high speeds, the engine would be screaming along near the red-line. A car like this would wear out very quickly and would be nearly undriveable.

The key difference between a manual and an automatic gearbox is that the manual gearbox locks and unlocks different sets of gears to the output shaft to achieve the various gear ratios, while in an automatic gearbox; the same set of gears produces all of the different gear ratios. The planetary gear set is the device that makes this possible in an automatic gearbox.

An Audi gearbox has become more reliable these days, but still as in all gearboxes it’s the most-easiest-to-break and very-expensive-to-fix part of the vehicle. If heavily abused, the gearbox can be easily destroyed within just half an hour. Any gearbox is very sensitive to the gearbox fluid quality and condition. Improper fluid type can damage the gearbox. When buying a used car, a gearbox is one of the most important parts to check.

When buying a used car, the gearbox is one of the most important parts to check. We strongly recommend having a used car inspected by a mechanic before buying it, it will well worth it. When buying a used car first checks the used car history records; it may save you some time and money. If the used car history report shows that the car you want to buy was used as a rental vehicle or has been involved in an accident, there is no point to even look at it. Ask the previous owner or salesperson if any repair has been done to the gearbox. If the gearbox is already rebuilt, try to avoid buying such a car. It’s not like all rebuilt gearbox will have problems – some of them work even better than before. The problem is that not all gearbox shops can do equally the same high-quality job. And since there is no way to verify if it was rebuilt properly or not, it’s better not to take chances. Another thing to be concern about, ask if the car you are looking for was used for towing a trailer. Gearboxes wear out quicker in many cars that were used for towing a trailer.
