Kia Car Engines: Shuma engine, Spectra, Cerato

The Kia Carens is a compact MPV. In North America, the car is called the Rondo. Available as a 5- or optional 7-passenger vehicle with either a standard 162 hp 2.4l 4-cylinder engine or an optional 182 hp 2.7l V6 engine in two trim levels. The straight-4 or inline-4 is an internal combustion engine with four cylinders aligned in one row.

Nicknamed a four-banger, this straight kia car engine configuration is the most common in cars with a displacement up to 2.3 Litres. The current “practical” limit to the displacement of Straight-4 engines in a car is around 2.7 litres. However, in tractors and other construction machinery, four-cylinder diesel engines with a displacement of 4.5 litres and above can still be found.

  • The straight-4 engine is not a balanced configuration. While a pair of pistons is always moving up at the same time as the other pair is moving down, piston speed – as with all internal combustion engines – is higher through the top 180 degrees of the stroke than the bottom 180 degrees, which leads to a secondary harmonic imbalance. While this is tolerable in a small low-displacement low-power configuration, the vibrations get worse with increasing size and power. Most straight-4 engines below 2.0 L in displacement rely on the damping effect of their engine mounts. Today, most engineers will make use of balance shafts above that limit. A 4-cylinder engine needs two balance shafts, rotating at twice the crankshaft frequency, to be smooth.

The Kia Pride was sold in four-door sedan (LX, GTX), three and five-door hatchback (CD-5) and five-door station wagon body styles. Originally powered by 1.1 or 1.3-liter carbureted petrol engines, the 1.1 unit was dropped in 1995 and the other received fuel injection in order to meet EU emissions requirements.

  • Fuel injection is a means of metering fuel into an internal combustion engine. In modern automotive applications, fuel metering is one of several functions performed by an “engine management system”. For gasoline engines, carburetors were the predominant method to meter fuel before the widespread use of fuel injection. However, a wide variety of injection systems have existed since the earliest usage of the internal combustion engine. The primary functional difference between carburetors and fuel injection is that fuel injection atomizes the fuel by forcibly pumping it through a small nozzle under high pressure, while a carburetor relies on the vacuum created by intake air rushing through it to add the fuel to the airstream. The fuel injector is only a nozzle and a valve: the power to inject the fuel comes from further back in the fuel supply, from a pump or a pressure container.

The first-generation Rio offered only one engine for each year: a 96 hp 1.5-litre DOHC I4 gasoline engine from 2001 through 2002, then a larger version of the same engine, a 1.6-litre DOHC four-cylinder rated at 105 hp, from 2003 through 2005. All years offered a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. An alternative of a 1.3-litre SOHC four-cylinder petrol or a diesel engine was offered in some other countries, including the United Kingdom.

  • Single overhead camshaft is a design in which one camshaft is placed within the cylinder head. In an inline engine this means there is one camshaft in the head, while in a V engine there are two camshafts: one per cylinder bank.
  • The SOHC design has less reciprocating mass than a comparable pushrod design. This can allow for higher engine speeds, which in turn will increase power output for a given torque. The cam operates the valves directly or through a rocker arm as opposed to overhead valve pushrod engines, which have tappets, long pushrods and rocker arms to transfer the movement of the lobes on the camshaft in the engine block to the valves in the cylinder head. SOHC designs offer reduced complexity compared to pushrod designs when used for multivalve heads, in which each cylinder has more than two valves. A double overhead camshaft (also called double overhead cam, dual overhead cam or twincam) valvetrain layout is characterized by two camshafts being located within the cylinder head, where there are separate camshafts for inlet and exhaust valves. In engines with more than one cylinder bank (V engines) this designation means two camshafts per bank, for a total of four.

The Kia Cerato also known as the Spectra / Sephia II model and also the Shuma were powered 1.5 L and 1.8 L fuel injected four-cylinder petrol engines.

  • The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the burning of a fuel occurs in a confined space called a combustion chamber. This exothermic reaction of a fuel with an oxidizer creates gases of high temperature and pressure, which are permitted to expand. The defining feature of an internal combustion engine is that useful work is performed by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement, for example by acting on pistons, rotors, or even by pressing on and moving the entire engine itself. This contrasts with external combustion engines, such as steam engines and Stirling engines, which use the combustion process to heat a separate working fluid, which then in turn does work, for example by moving a piston.

The Kia Opirus (known as Amanti in North America) is a mid-size car / executive car. It shares some components with its now-defunct corporate cousin, the Hyundai XG Grandeur, including its 3.5 L V6 engine. For 2007, the Kia Opirus will once again share the same engine as the current Hyundai Grandeur (Azera), this time being a 3.8L V6 engine.Kia Car Engines: Shuma engine, Spectra, Cerato

  • A V6 engine is a V engine with six cylinders. It is the second most common engine configuration in modern cars after the inline four; it shares with that engine a compactness well suited to the popular front-wheel drive layout, and is becoming more common as car weights increase. The ideal cylinder bank angle for a V6 is 60 degrees, which design tends to minimize vibration and encourage cancellation of reciprocating forces. 90 degree V6 engines have also been produced, often to take advantage of production-line tooling set up to produce V8 engines (for which a 90 degree arrangement is optimal).
